PES PAV course
A PES PAV course is mandatory for all professionals involved in the management, maintenance or installation of electrical systems, whether de-energised or live.
But what exactly do PES and PAV mean? The regulations define PES as “Persona Esperta” (Skilled Person) and PAV as “Persona Avvertita” (Instructed Person). These are specific qualifications assigned in writing by the employer, certifying each operator’s skills and ensuring their own safety and that of their colleagues while carrying out electrical activities.
Who needs the PES PAV course?
The PES PAV course is aimed at everyone who, in their daily work, must work on electrical systems, whether de-energised or live. This means electricians, maintenance technicians, industrial machinery technicians, and generally anyone who needs to interact directly with electrical systems.
The training is not simply mandatory, but a crucial element in preventing serious accidents and ensuring a safe working environment. Indeed, every year, in Italy and elsewhere, many workplace accidents result from incorrect interventions or poor awareness of risks.
What do the regulations say about PES PAV training?
PES PAV training is regulated precisely and in detail by Legislative Decree 81/2008 (Arts. 81-86) and CEI Standard 11-27, 4th edition, 2014. According to these provisions, the employer is obliged to provide workers with specific and adequate training, aimed not only at knowing the risks, but above all at managing them safely while carrying out work activities.
What do you learn during a PES PAV course?
By attending a PES PAV course, operators acquire a series of specific theoretical and practical skills needed to safely carry out all the electrical activities they will perform in their daily work. Let us look in detail at what a typical PES PAV course includes:
• fundamentals of current legislation on electrical work (Legislative Decree 81/2008, CEI 11-27);
• analysis and assessment of risks related to electrical systems;
• criteria for assigning PES and PAV qualifications;
• operating procedures for work on live and de-energised electrical systems;
• correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) specific to electrical work;
• first aid techniques and tools in the event of an electrical accident;
• management of emergencies and electrical risk situations.
The training also includes practical exercises, essential for gaining full awareness of the procedures to adopt in daily work.
How long does the course last and how often must it be refreshed?
A complete PES PAV course has a minimum duration of 16 hours, covering both theory and practice. The regulations do not set a fixed deadline for the refresher, but it is strongly recommended to attend periodic courses to keep your knowledge up to date with regulatory and technological developments.

Who can deliver the course?
PES PAV training must be delivered exclusively by accredited training bodies, with teaching staff qualified in accordance with the regulations. This guarantees not only the formal validity of the course, but above all the quality of the training received by operators.
Why is it so important to attend a PES PAV course?
The benefits of attending a PES PAV course are many and tangible. First of all, you can be sure of working in compliance with current regulations, thus avoiding the risk of penalties. Secondly, but even more importantly, you learn to recognise and prevent potentially dangerous situations, increasing your own safety and that of your colleagues.
A correctly trained operator actively helps reduce the number of electricity-related workplace accidents, improving the overall quality of the work carried out in the company.
