Forklift operator course

Forklift operator training concerns anyone in charge of operating forklifts or lift trucks, regardless of the industry. If you use a forklift you must take a specific course required by law.

Indeed, under Article 73, paragraph 5 of Legislative Decree 81/08, operators of equipment requiring special skills must receive targeted and certified training. This provision was further specified by the State-Regions Agreement of 22 February 2012, which clearly sets out the requirements, duration and format of the courses

What do you learn during a forklift operator course?

The training covers fundamental topics such as safe driving techniques, the operator’s responsibilities and vehicle maintenance. All aspects that allow operators to avoid risks and accidents at work. Here are some key topics covered during a forklift operator course:
  • Specific safety regulations for forklifts
  • Correct and safe use of the vehicle
  • Maintenance and periodic checks of the forklift
  • Operating procedures for accident prevention
  • Driving and manoeuvring techniques in difficult environments
  • Legal responsibilities and emergency management

The main goal of the course is to ensure that every forklift operator is able to work in complete safety, protecting themselves and others from possible accidents.

How long does the forklift operator course last and when must it be refreshed?

The forklift operator course lasts 12 hours in total, divided between theoretical and practical training. This training is valid for five years, after which a refresher course of at least 4 hours must be taken.

During the refresher, the main concepts are reviewed and any regulatory or technological changes are introduced. This allows the operator to maintain a high level of safety and competence over time.

Who can provide
forklift operator
training courses?

Forklift operator courses can only be delivered by training bodies accredited by the Regions, in accordance with specific rules laid down by law. This ensures high standards of quality and seriousness, both in content and in teaching methods.

It is important to choose courses with a strong practical component, because theory alone is not enough: it is essential to learn first-hand how to use the vehicles and how to handle in practice the situations that may arise at work.

The real benefits
of the forklift operator course for workers and companies

The added value of attending a forklift operator course goes well beyond the legal obligation. A well-trained operator is less exposed to risks, works more efficiently and helps prevent accidents that can have serious consequences, both in human and economic terms.

Companies that invest in serious training for their forklift operators also see concrete long-term benefits: fewer accidents, lower safety-related costs, greater productivity and a calmer, safer working environment.

Online forklift operator training: is it possible?

Forklift operator training necessarily includes an in-person practical part. However, some introductory theory modules can also be completed online, offering greater flexibility to workers and companies. Nevertheless, in order to truly acquire the necessary practical skills, it is essential to complete the course with a classroom part and practical tests.
